My name is Lucian, I am a seasoned full-stack software engineer with over 22 years of experience developing, architecting, and leading large-scale web software projects.

Experience highlights

My first job as a junior developer was in 2002, when I was 17. Nine years later, in 2011, I left my role as Director of Engineering to start consulting and contracting professionally full-time. Since then, I have worked with many different teams on many different projects, tackling many different challenges.

This experience has allowed me to gain hands-on practice and extensive knowledge in a wide range of technologies, as well as managing a lot of different engineering teams and engineering processes:

Contractor

2020-2023 St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

  • I was hired as a contractor for St. Jude Cloud to help maintain a catalog of web-based cancer-research data visualizations;

  • Working on the project, I identified several development process inefficiencies that led to considerable quality issues and slowdowns in delivery;

  • I researched and presented an improvement plan to leadership that would potentially save thousands of engineering hours per year as well as drastically improve delivery quality and speed;

  • My recommendations led to my role expanding to leading the development of two complex data visualization platforms alongside a dedicated development and product team;

  • I led the development and delivery of the two platforms in record time, including architecting and developing auxiliary systems like multi-tenant authentication, a secure API, and SSO integration;

  • Delivery of both projects was successful, and they were both submitted to the AACR for publishing and peer review as part of Abstract 1901 in June 2022 and Abstract 3163 in April 2023.

Contractor

2019-2020 European Automotive Alliance

  • I was hired as a consultant to assess the viability of and create a project proposal for overhauling a large legacy ERP (dealing with warehousing, tracking stock, point of sale, and order fulfillment) in the automotive parts industry;

  • I organized fact-finding and the planning process, which involved talking to stakeholders, from C-suite down to individual retail sales teams and warehouse managers, gathering and understanding business and industry requirements as well as challenges the legacy system was facing;

  • I successfully navigated issues like competing stakeholder requests and budget and timeline constraints, and with a firm understanding of the requirements, I put together a master plan detailing my technology recommendations, software architecture as well as a comprehensive staffing strategy for the project;

  • I managed the technical process of recruiting, interviewing, and hiring developers for the project, hand-picking each candidate to specific sets of knowledge and experience requirements;

  • I mentored and paired with each team member individually as we kicked off the project, making sure the initial PRs were on track with the proposed technical solution and project architecture;

  • I continued to contribute to the project, writing code and doing code reviews with the rest of the team, overseeing the team’s first deliverables and successes until leadership was comfortable with me rolling off the project.

  • I was hired as a contractor to build a PWA (progressive web application) for a Swedish startup in the Fintech space (specializing in investment and asset allocation for personal retirement funds);

  • I worked with the client to overcome one of their most significant pain points: scaling, an issue they very painfully faced with previous systems, by architecting an entirely serverless solution based on AWS that would essentially scale on autopilot;

  • I developed an entirely serverless GraphQL backend API using AWS Cognito for authentication, AWS DynamoDB and AWS Aurora for database storage, and AWS Lambda for compute;

  • I developed an entirely serverless delivery and deployment pipeline based on AWS CodeCommit, AWS CodePipeline, and AWS API Gateway to automatically test and deploy several API microservices and a PWA client application.

I have also helped Toptal.com internal project team architect a distributed solution for one of their clients; I have helped Green Horse Games scale their online games, Insomnia Cookies and Alteryx work on some of their platforms, MavenHut to run and track user acquisition and so many more.
